Markos Statement

With the Cayman GT4, Porsche presented a GT sports car based on the Cayman for the first time in 2015.
With regard to technical components, Porsche has partly used the "big brother 911". The chassis is based on components from the 911 GT3 (991) and has been completely re-tuned. The same applies to the brake system, which also comes from the 911 GT3. Also the engine is an old acquaintance and comes from the rear of the 911 Carrera S. As a mid-engine the 3.8 litre 6-cylinder boxer was turned by 180 degrees to find space in the Gt4.
Among purists, the GT4 with naturally aspirated engine and 6-speed manual transmission is considered an insider tip when it comes to "pure Porsche feeling" and I was therefore very curious to see how the Cayman behaves, especially in comparison to the GT3.
Externally it differs clearly from its civilian Cayman brothers: The aerodynamics package is consistently designed for downforce and also looks good: Three striking entry openings in the front and the large, fixed rear wing indicate that the GT4 is serious about its race track ambitions. The car I tested had, so to speak, everything on board that makes it a thoroughbred sports car: PCCB ceramic brake system, full-body seats made of carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CfK), a specific Sport Chrono package with the unique Track Precision App and the Clubsport package.

But let's get to the real question: Does the Cayman GT4 deserve to be called a GT?
As usual with Porsche, the GT4 leaves nothing to be desired in terms of racetrack performance: The chassis, brakes and aerodynamics of the are designed for maximum driving dynamics and in terms of handling, steering precision and traction it is comparable to the GT3. With a lap time of 2:10.3, it is even a tad faster than significantly more powerful vehicles such as the Audi R8 V10 (540 hp) or the Mercedes AMG E63 S (612 hp) and takes over a second off the GT3 997 MK2 (435 hp). However, compared to the 991 GT3 RS with 500hp and especially the 991.2 with 520hp introduced in 2018, which performs extremely well on the racetrack, the lower engine power is of course noticeable. This is also clearly reflected in the lap times and the current GT3 RS clearly shows where the hammer hangs with 10:04.2.

CONCLUSION: The GT4 is a mid-engine sports car that can be had for all kinds of fun on the racetrack or in twisty terrain. Purists from the manual gearshift faction in particular will have a lot of fun with it. If the "organ donor" Porsche 911 Carrera S has become too big and too comfortable, and if you can do without the emergency seats or would rather invest the surcharge on a GT3 model in a well-equipped everyday estate, you will find the Porsche Cayman GT4 a compact, gritty and honest character actor with clear GT genes and excellent track tool properties.
