Markos Statement

One attribute imposes itself immediately after the first few metres: "brutal!". Thanks to the 4-litre V8 and the two twin scroll turbochargers, the full torque of 850 Nm is already available from 2,500 rpm, which is also converted into forward thrust thanks to the AMG 4 MATIC+. This is evident from the lap times and the top speed of 229 km/h from start to finish. The ergonomics are top notch, as is typical of Mercedes, and the lateral support in the individually adjustable performance seats is excellent. The brute sound perfectly matches the sporting character of the Saloon, as does the AMG Ride Control suspension and ESP, which can be switched off completely. This AMG also appeals to you emotionally.
A small point of criticism is due to the drive system. You can't shake off the feeling that, at least on the race track, the torque distribution between the front and rear axles reacts a little too sluggishly, which unfortunately leads to a somewhat indifferent behaviour. In contrast to the 911 turbo or Audi R8 which can be driven like "rear-wheel drive cars with additional traction", the electronics intervene here somewhat unnaturally and try to compensate the intended slight oversteer and "pull the car straight", which is more disturbing than helpful on the race track.

That's a pity, because the steering is precise and unagitated, and the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 9-speed sports transmission (automatic with wet multi-disc starting clutch) also shifts quickly and precisely. The only drawback in racing mode is that the gears cannot be preselected when shifting down, even in manual mode. The high-performance composite brake system of the tested vehicle works well in normal operation as expected from AMG, but reaches its limits at racing speed, which is certainly due to the vehicle's weight of 2 tons. After one lap, the pedal pressure was already soft. But this can possibly be controlled with the optional ceramic high-performance composite brake system. The weight is also noticeable when braking into corners and allows the E 63 to be pushed over the front axle, i.e. you actually have to have completed the braking process before the corner to avoid understeer at the corner entrance.

CONCLUSION: squaring the circle is not possible even with the AMG E 63 S, because at two tonnes it is simply too heavy for a real super sports car. Of course, this does not mean that it is "slow", because the power development is brutal - it is really fast. On the Pannoniaring, for example, it also leaves behind the Porsche 911 GT3 (997) designed for the race track or the current BMW M4. However, at least the standard brakes quickly reach their limit when driving hard and even the four-wheel drive is not 100% convincing in racing. But if you're looking for an everyday saloon with plenty of punch and excellent traction, which can be moved extremely sporty and underpinned by a great V8 sound, you'll certainly have fun with this steam hammer!
